Against the Wind by Caitríona Nic Ghiollaphádraig

This is a story on two levels.

Firstly

This is a description of the 2670km cycle Caitríona took from Moville, Co. Donegal to Kinsale, Co. Cork on the Wild Atlantic Way in 2017 during the wettest and windiest August/ September since records began!

Secondly

This is a searingly honest account of the mental and emotional journey. Doubt had called to visit Caitríona shortly before the cycle through a personally distressing incident which coloured the trip in a way that was to open her up to loneliness and the question of what it means to belong.

About the Author

Caitríona Nic Ghiollaphádraig is a five Rhythms and Open Floor Mindful Movement teacher.  She teaches in Ireland and Europe.  Cycling has been her passion and saviour since she was a child on a tricycle with stabilisers.  She now lives in Cleggan, Connemara, Co. Galway.

Early years

In 1978 she qualified as a Home Economics teacher (B.Ed. H.E) via Sion Hill and Trinity College Dublin. During those 6 years Caitríona began studying Health Education with The Cork Social and Health Education Project and qualified in facilitating Health Education classes-which she did as part of after school studies with her senior students.

Further Education

She took herself up to Dublin and studied Development Studies for 1 year in Kimmage Manor. Instead of returning to Cobh to put her unknowing students through the politics of food she got waylaid by the Lourdes Project in the North Inner City of Dublin where she was asked to teach cookery to adults and from there to design and develop Personal and Social Development courses for women.

Whilst there Caitríona also trained in organisational development and participated to certificate level in Group Analytical Process.

Connemara

All this finally took her to Connemara, the place she now calls home. She worked as a community worker,  specialising in training women in Enterprise and Assertiveness courses with the Forum Project.

From there she joined Community Action Network (CAN) and travelled the length and breadth of the island of Ireland facilitating community groups in all types of development work.

In 2008 Caitríona began what has now become a true passion for exploring the links between neuroscience-the brain- and the body. Thus her new website is called Embodied Brain and my work is called Embodied Presence.  She participated in Sensor motor Trauma and Development training from 2010 to 2014.  In 2014 she became a working member of Open Floor International, a school of embodied movement practice.
